Current PDU structure
The April 2026 CCR handbook separates Education from Giving Back and defines minimums and maximums.
Education · 35+
Earn at least 8 PDUs each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen; the remaining 11 may be in any area.
Giving Back · up to 25
Eligible volunteering, creating knowledge and working as a professional are subject to category limits.
Renewal
Record activities in CCRS, meet the requirements and submit the separate certification-renewal fee.
PMP holders need at least eight Education PDUs in Ways of Working, eight in Power Skills and eight in Business Acumen. The remaining eleven education PDUs may be earned in any Talent Triangle area. Education can continue beyond 35 and can supply all 60 PDUs if the activities qualify.
Ways of Working covers approaches and practices used to deliver. Power Skills includes leadership and collaborative capabilities. Business Acumen connects projects to strategy, markets, finance and organizational context. Classify the actual learning time rather than choosing a category because it has space remaining.
Giving Back can contribute up to 25 PDUs through eligible activities such as volunteering, creating knowledge and working as a professional. Subcategory limits apply, including a current maximum for working as a professional. The current CCR handbook should be checked before reporting.
Do not postpone education because Giving Back feels easier to claim. The education minimum and three skill-area minimums still control the cycle. Keep dates, descriptions and supporting evidence in case a PDU claim is audited.
Set a development goal for each year instead of dividing 60 mechanically. In year one, strengthen an immediate delivery gap. In year two, broaden leadership and business context. In year three, close distribution gaps, verify records and renew before the deadline.
Report PDUs as activities occur. This reduces lost records and makes the CCRS dashboard a live plan. Maintain copies of certificates, attendance records, notes or other evidence required for the activity type.
Start education and log activities immediately.
Balance all three Talent Triangle areas.
Close gaps, audit records and renew.
PMI membership is not the same as PMP certification renewal. The CCR handbook lists different renewal prices for members and non-members, while membership itself has an annual charge. Check the current account totals when the renewal window opens.
A low-cost PDU plan can combine employer learning, professional reading, webinars, chapter activity and focused paid development. Choose activities for genuine capability value first, then verify that they fit CCR rules.
Avoid treating renewal as a final-month points exercise. Map the three-year cycle into six-month review periods and choose education that supports current work. The Talent Triangle minimums are constraints, not the whole development strategy. A coherent sequence can build capability while satisfying the reporting structure.
Record an activity soon after completion with its date, provider, description, category and evidence. Keep certificates, registration records, agendas or notes according to the current CCR requirements. When an activity touches several skill areas, report it accurately rather than assigning hours only to whichever category is currently low.
Review the CCRS record at least twice a year and before changing employers or losing access to a learning platform. Confirm the cycle end date, contact information and renewal steps directly with PMI. Separate PMI membership renewal from certification renewal so an expired membership does not create false assumptions about credential status.
Before the final renewal submission, reconcile the activity log with retained evidence and the current handbook. Resolve duplicate entries or category uncertainty while there is still time to complete additional eligible learning.
