PMP candidates qualify through a combination of completed education, professional project experience and project-management training. PMI now publishes four education-based paths. Depending on the recognized education level, candidates need between two and five years of qualifying experience from the previous ten years. Overlapping projects are documented separately, but shared calendar months are counted once.

The experience must involve responsibility for professional project decisions, planning, delivery and outcomes. A project-manager job title is not the test, and routine operations do not automatically become projects. Build a dated project inventory before enrolling. Choose eligible PMP training—not just a convenient course

Candidates normally need 35 hours of eligible project-management education or an active CAPM certification. Course format, instructor involvement and provider status matter because PMI has announced rules affecting live training beginning December 1, 2026. Check the current rule for the delivery format you intend to use and verify any claimed authorization through the credential owner.

A persuasive course page should still provide a complete specification. Confirm the training hours, learning objectives, alignment with the current exam, delivery dates and time zone, instructor, included materials, practice access, application support, accessibility arrangements, price, tax treatment and refund or transfer rules. No training provider can guarantee application acceptance or an exam pass.

Prepare an accurate PMP application and audit record

Organize education, training and project records before opening the application. Describe each project in plain professional language: why it existed, what you led, which decisions you made and what outcome followed. Avoid copied process lists or exaggerated authority. The entries should be consistent with dates, employment records and the people who could verify the work.

PMI may select an application for audit. That is a verification process, not an accusation. Follow the exact request shown in the candidate account, collect the specified evidence and respond within the stated deadline. Keep copies of submitted material and clarify discrepancies before sending the package. A provider may help organize information but should never fabricate or rewrite experience the candidate did not have.

Prepare for the current PMP exam

The PMP exam launched in July 2026 contains 180 questions over 240 minutes and continues to emphasize applied judgement. Preparation should cover people, delivery processes and the business environment across predictive, adaptive and hybrid work. Modern project leadership also requires attention to value, sustainability, technology and responsible use of artificial intelligence where those factors affect decisions.

Use practice questions as a diagnostic tool rather than a score-collecting exercise. For every error, identify whether the cause was missing knowledge, a misread condition, weak judgement, pacing or fatigue. Mix focused practice with timed sets and full simulations. Readiness is better demonstrated by stable performance and explainable decisions than by repeating memorized questions.

The exam fee is only one layer of the investment. Build a written budget covering eligible training, optional PMI membership, the examination, taxes or currency conversion, practice resources, possible rescheduling or retakes, and the time needed to study. Confirm the current amount inside the official checkout because regional pricing, currency display and tax can change.

Compare course value from documented inclusions rather than a promotional discount. A lower price may exclude the exam voucher, current materials, instructor contact or continued practice access. A higher price is not automatically better. Decide which support changes the likelihood of completing the plan, and obtain material promises in writing before payment.

Use and maintain the PMP credential after passing

PMP can strengthen evidence of project leadership, but it does not guarantee employment, promotion or a particular salary. Search current Canadian roles in the target sector and region. Note whether PMP is required, preferred or absent, then compare those signals with the experience, domain knowledge and results employers request alongside it.

PMP holders maintain the credential on a three-year cycle by earning and reporting 60 professional development units under current continuing-certification rules. Plan learning around capabilities that improve the work rather than waiting until the deadline. Retain activity evidence, monitor category requirements and confirm the renewal fee and submission rules before the cycle closes.
