PMP Exam Changes for 2026

New domain weights change the balance

People now represents 33 percent, Process 41 percent and Business Environment 26 percent. Business Environment grew substantially from the prior eight-percent weighting, while People and Process remain central. The domains still interact inside real project decisions.

Preparation should connect stakeholder leadership and delivery practices with organizational strategy, compliance, benefits and external change. Do not isolate business context until the final week.

AI, sustainability and value appear in context

PMI describes a stronger focus on AI, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, outcomes and business impact. Candidates should understand how a project leader evaluates tools, data, risk, ethics, governance and value—not memorize technology product names.

The exam continues to reflect predictive, agile and hybrid delivery. Modernization does not erase planning, risk, quality or change. It asks candidates to choose practices that fit the environment and protect intended outcomes.

Question experiences are more applied

The current ECO lists multiple-choice, multiple-response, drag-and-drop and practicum hands-on testing that may involve tools, data and case studies. The exam still contains 180 questions in 240 minutes with ten unscored pretest items.

Use practice that requires interpretation and action. Reading alone cannot rehearse navigation, case information, pacing or the discipline of choosing the best next step from plausible alternatives.

Eligibility and training rules also changed

The experience window is now ten years and four education-and-experience paths are published, including a technical or vocational path. Candidates must match their actual education level and count non-overlapping professional project months.

Starting December 1, 2026, live instructor-led training is eligible only through PMI’s specified provider categories. Self-paced on-demand training currently follows a different provider rule. Verify the latest wording before enrolling.

Audit an existing preparation plan for the new exam

Begin with every dated resource in the plan: course modules, books, question banks, saved notes, videos and full simulations. Mark whether the resource explicitly aligns with the July 2026 Examination Content Outline. Alignment does not require discarding every earlier explanation, but it does require knowing which source controls the current domain weights, experience paths and question experience.

Create a gap list for the areas PMI added or emphasized, including value, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, artificial intelligence and applied work. Map each gap to a learning activity and a practice activity. Reading about a new topic is not enough if the exam expects the candidate to interpret information, make a decision or complete an applied task.

Recalculate eligibility using the current four-path structure and ten-year experience window. Candidates who prepared under an older table should not assume the same month requirement still applies. Training already completed may still be relevant, but live instructor-led courses beginning December 1, 2026 are subject to the current provider-category rule described by PMI.

Complete a new baseline set only after updating the resource map. Compare error patterns and pacing rather than trying to translate an old score directly. Keep the ECO, appointment confirmation and provider evidence with the study record so future updates can be evaluated from dated sources.

Ask any training provider to identify where its curriculum addresses the current domains and applied question types. Treat a vague “updated for 2026” label as a prompt for evidence, not proof of alignment.
