Project Management Certification FAQ: what to know before you decide

Long answers live on dedicated pages so this hub stays useful rather than repeating every article.

Before training

Eligibility and choice

Experience paths, CAPM alternatives, provider rules and certification fit.

Before the exam

Application and preparation

Project records, audits, current exam structure, study and practice.

After passing

Career and renewal

Outcome evidence, 60 PDUs, Talent Triangle rules and renewal fees.

Eligibility and certification choice

Canadian candidates follow PMI’s global PMP rules. Current eligibility uses four education-and-experience paths requiring between two and five years of non-overlapping professional project leadership within the last ten years, plus 35 hours of eligible training or an active CAPM.

A project-manager title is not required, but the work must be professional project leadership rather than routine operations, personal projects or degree-program research. Candidates without the experience threshold can compare CAPM, which requires a secondary credential and 23 hours of education but no project experience.

  • Check the education path.
  • Map unique calendar months.
  • Separate projects from operations.
  • Verify the training delivery rule and provider.

Application and audit

Prepare education, training and project records before opening the application. Describe each project’s purpose, dates, your leadership and its outcome. List overlapping projects separately but count shared months once.

If audited, follow the PMI dashboard notice. The handbook describes education evidence, verifier signatures and training records, a 90-day submission window and a typical five-to-seven-business-day review after a complete package. PMI makes the decision; no provider can guarantee approval.

Exam, cost and preparation

The current PMP exam has 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two scheduled breaks and domain weights of People 33 percent, Process 41 percent and Business Environment 26 percent. Use July 2026-aligned materials and practise scenarios, applied questions, pacing and section closure.

PMI’s public page displayed $405 for members and $655 as the full exam amount on the review date, but the panel did not label currency and PMI says regional prices vary. Confirm currency, tax and total in the signed-in account. Training tuition, membership, retakes and renewal are separate budget items.

Training provider and course questions

Starting December 1, 2026, live instructor-led training must come through PMI’s specified provider categories to be eligible. Current self-paced rules differ. Verify a provider’s status directly and obtain the course hours, delivery, instructor, access, support, price and policies in writing.

This site has not yet approved public cohort dates, tuition, ATP status, bilingual delivery, guarantees, tax-credit eligibility, pass rates or learner testimonials. Those legacy claims are excluded until documentary evidence exists.

Career and renewal

PMP can strengthen a career signal but does not guarantee salary, employment or promotion. PMI’s latest global salary survey reports a 17 percent higher median among certified respondents across 21 countries; use current Canadian role and regional evidence for a personal decision.

PMP holders need 60 PDUs in each three-year cycle, including at least 35 Education PDUs and current Talent Triangle minimums. Report activities in CCRS and remember that certification renewal and PMI membership are separate.

How to evaluate an answer found elsewhere

Check who controls the fact. PMI controls PMP eligibility, examination and renewal; another credential owner controls its own program; a provider controls only its offering and policies. A blog can explain a rule but should link to the current primary source when the decision involves eligibility, money or a deadline.

Look for a review date and the version of the exam or handbook used. The PMP exam and eligibility structure changed in July 2026, and live instructor-led training has a further rule beginning December 1, 2026. An undated answer can sound precise while describing a previous system.

Separate global requirements from regional and provider details. PMI rules may apply globally while currency, tax, appointment availability and local labour-market evidence vary. Course dates, instructors, prices, language, guarantees and reviews must come from verified provider records rather than being inferred from general PMP information.

  • Identify the authority for the claim.
  • Check the publication or review date.
  • Confirm which exam version applies.
  • Distinguish global, regional and provider facts.
  • Follow the primary source before acting.
