Both
Useful when a role combines enterprise project responsibility with substantial agile delivery.
PMP eligibility uses education-based paths requiring two to five years of non-overlapping project leadership in the past ten years. PMI-ACP requires a secondary credential, formal agile training and one of several current agile-experience paths. The March 2026 ECO lists an active PMP as one way to satisfy the agile-experience requirement.
The experience is not identical. PMP asks whether you led professional projects. PMI-ACP asks whether you have applicable agile experience or an accepted alternative path. Check the current ECO because PMI-ACP training-hour publications have changed and older official pages may conflict.
The 2026 PMP exam weights People, Process and Business Environment and includes adaptive delivery, AI, sustainability and value in broader project scenarios. PMI-ACP organizes its current exam around Mindset, Leadership, Product and Delivery.
PMP is not “waterfall certification,” and PMI-ACP is not a Scrum-only credential. Both are method-aware and application-oriented, but they operate at different levels of breadth and agile concentration.
The PMP exam currently has 180 questions in 240 minutes. PMI-ACP has 120 questions in 180 minutes and one scheduled break on the current public page. Exam length alone does not determine difficulty; preparation should reflect the experience and judgement each credential validates.
PMP requires 60 PDUs per three-year cycle. PMI-ACP requires 30. A qualifying activity may sometimes support multiple PMI credentials under CCR rules, but candidates should classify and report it accurately.
PMP can be the foundation for a senior project role, with PMI-ACP added when agile depth matters. PMI-ACP can also be the primary credential for an experienced agile practitioner whose work does not align with a broad PMP goal. The sequence should follow the next role, not a badge-collection plan.
Review live Canadian postings and talk with leaders in the target environment. Count required and preferred mentions, then compare the evidence against eligibility, cost and renewal effort.
Collect target roles and mark where responsibility sits: whole-project outcomes, agile product delivery, team facilitation, enterprise governance or a combination. PMP is usually the broader project signal; PMI-ACP provides deeper agile-practitioner evidence. The title alone does not reveal which scope the employer expects.
Check both eligibility records separately. An active PMP may satisfy one current PMI-ACP experience route, but PMI-ACP still has its own education and application requirements. Training publications changed during 2026, so use the current credential page and application workflow rather than repeating an undated hour requirement from another site.
When both credentials fit, choose the first based on the immediate role gap and the evidence already available. Build the second only when it adds a distinct capability or market signal. Continue developing the practice through real delivery, retrospectives, stakeholder decisions and measurable outcomes after the exam.
Revisit the decision after six to twelve months of work evidence. A changed role, stronger project scope or deeper agile responsibility can legitimately change which credential should come next.
